Peritoneal

Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) is a treatment in which your blood is cleansed inside your abdomen, or peritoneal membrane, which acts as a natural filter. A solution called dialysate flows from a bag through a catheter into your abdomen. Waste products and excess fluids are removed from your blood into the solution which is drained. The process is repeated based upon your physician’s prescribed treatment plan for you.

Advantages to patients include:
  • Fewer dietary or fluid restrictions
  • Absence of needle sticks
  • Independence and ability to normalize daily routines
  • The ability to perform the dialysis at home
  • Decreased dependence on blood pressure medicine
  • Fewer problems with anemia.
Peritoneal Dialysis is performed daily and while generally performed at home, can also be done at work or school. Quality of life is thought to be improved as less time is spent in dialysis centers leaving more time available for family, work and friends.

Patients can do peritoneal dialysis at home, and in some cases while they sleep. Your physician may prescribe a machine, called a cycler, for you that performs these dialysate solution exchanges automatically for you while you are sleeping.
